Pitched 2: So close, yet so far away

It’s the final few loose ends of a major project that are the most frustrating, not because they’re particularly difficult or troublesome, but because the finish line is right freakin’ there, just out of your reach, teasing you like the chicken nugget that slips from of your grasp and under the passenger side seat. I’m talking about Pitched! 2: Seven More Stories, which is the follow-up to my self-published comic anthology of 2009, Pitched!: Nine Stories. It is, I hope, an eclectic and entertaining batch of stories made 100 percent better by a talented bunch of artists and collaborators. Taking a stab at comic art

And cheating at it along the way. I drew all throughout my childhood, a sheet of not-to-be-blank-for-long paper perpetually in front of me and a pencil feverishly scritching away drawing maps, wars, and terrible comics. It probably wasn’t until the eighth grade and Jason Dixon, talented sonofabitch that he was, that I realized I couldn’t actually draw. Didn’t stop me from doing loads of really awful comics in high school, though. A few friends would make up our own goofy superhero comics and pass them out to one another. PITCHED2: Ace Starstruck

Another art preview snagged from the upcoming second volume of Pitched, my series of comic anthologies. This one is the opening page of an Ace Starstruck story, a Buck Roger-meets-super-fun concept created by my buddy Frank Saxon. Frank asked if I’d like to write his characters. PITCHED 2: Something a little different

And now for something a little different. I’ve wanted to work with artist, colorist, and photographer Ian Sokoliwski for some time now. He’s not just a very talented guy, he’s also funny and wacky and unusual in all the right ways. (Check out my interview with Ian to see what makes Ian the Professional Colorist tick.) So needless to say, I was pleased when he agreed to jump on board for Pitched 2, the second in my series of comic anthologies. PITCHED 2: Happily Ever After

Here’s a neat one for you. “Happily Ever After” is a humorous swashbuckling tale first conceived as a short story, then plotted for the first Pitched! anthology, then dropped only to be resurrected for the upcoming second installment. The talented Trevor Giberson dove into the art and captured the tone of the story perfectly. Below is a preview page of his art. The awesome John Mietus, who lettered stories like “The Homecoming of Carlos Ruiz” in the first volume, will only add to the fun.
