And it starts in five minutes.
Something came over me the other day. It might have been Netflix suddenly throwing Trek in my face. Maybe it’s the result of a space slug crawling into my ear. Don’t know. Whatever it was, it resulted in a feeling I’ve pretty much never had in my life: “I should watch some Star Tek – and a LOT of it!”
If that sounds like a knock on Star Trek, it’s not. Rather, it’s just to say that I’ve never been anything more than a vaguely casual Star Trek fan. I watched most of the original series as a kid, saw many seasons of The Next Generation and one or two of Deep Space Nine with my old man, saw all the original crew movies when they came out (also fell asleep in the movie theater during Generations), and watched both reboots.
So I’ve experience Trek. I don’t hate Trek.
I’m just not nearly as drawn to Trek as I am to that other Star series. It just … exists.
Hell, I’ve only seen two Trek movies more than once: The Motion Picture, several times, and The Wrath of Khan, probably five or six times.
Otherwise, I’ve seen none of this stuff since it came out. It’s all very “okay, that’s fine” to me. I think DeForest Kelley’s Bones is a great character. I slightly dislike William Shatner as a person. I think Leonard Nimoy was an awesome dude in every way. And none of these opinions are very strong.
Yet I love science fiction and am a sucker for film series, and all this stuff just popped up on Netflix, so what better reason to dive into Trek and see it with fresh eyes?
Unlike my admittedly lame X-Men movie marathon, I hope to actually have something to say here. That marathon was me taking some private posts to friends made on a discussion forum and sticking them online. They were fast and loose, very lightweight, and it shows. Sorry to disappoint, everyone!
This should be different. Make no mistake, I’m not promising heady commentary with my Trek marathon, but I’m hoping it won’t be empty bullshit, either. At the very least, I hope it gets some Trek nerds talking about how wrong I am.
So there we go. I’ll post a new one every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. I have not yet decided whether or not I’m going to just do the original crew movies or do the Next Generation stuff as well. Depends on if people are digging it, I suppose, so tell me in the comments or on Facebook or wherever the hell you’re seeing this.
Either way, we start in five minutes. Mr. Sulu, take her out …
KHAAANNN!!!

And double-dumbass on you!
