Lots of people have dreams of making it in the music industry, whether they dream of making it big in a band as the lead guitar, or they want to be a world renowned solo artist. The industry is pretty tough to get into, sure, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do it.
In this post, we’re going to talk about what you must do if you want to find success in music. Read on if you’re ready to find out what you’re capable of…
Have A Clear Vision And Goals
The first thing you need to do is have a clear vision of where you want to be and your goals. Picture yourself a few years from now. What would you like to be doing? Where would you like to be living? Who would you like to be spending time with? Write it down so you have a completely clear picture of where and who you want to be.
What are your goals? Come up with realistic long and short term goals. Write them down as if you have achieved them and keep them somewhere you can look at them multiple times a day. This will help you to get into the right frame of mind as you picture your vision for the future, too!
Be As Optimistic As Possible
Negativity never got anybody anywhere amazing. Get your head in the right place and the rest will usually follow. Be open to opportunities, and try to see the good in every situation, even if it’s just a lesson you’re learning from something that didn’t quite go to plan. Being as optimistic as you can isn’t about being a ‘Pollyanna’ – it’s about seeing the opportunity in everything. What you focus on you get more of, so make sure you’re focusing on the right things.
Work To Become The Best At What You Do
Make sure you focus on your craft. Work hard to become the best at what you do, whether you want to be a singer, drummer, or a producer. Practice as much as you can. Work on your own projects and offer to work on other people’s projects to get experience. You just can’t beat experience, so build up a portfolio and hone your skills.
Market Yourself Online
Marketing yourself online is absolutely key to getting your name out there and building a following. Don’t wait for somebody else to hand you a ‘golden ticket’ and tell you you’re good enough. Pave your own way by exploring different marketing channels and figuring out how to brand yourself.
You can buy SoundCloud plays to promote your music, make youtube videos, write blog posts, and much more. Make sure you look into various platforms and forms of content to get your name out there and spread awareness of what you’re trying to do.
Spend Time With People Who Have Similar Goals
Studies have shown that we become like the people we spend the most time with. Make sure you’re spending time with the right people! Are you spending time with people who are positive and have goals for their future that they are working towards? You don’t have to want the same things, or even be in the same industry, but you shouldn’t have similar attitudes and outlooks on life. Negative and toxic people can really slow you down and sometimes even stop you from reaching your dreams altogether.
Become A Jack Of All Trades
Make sure that you don’t limit yourself by only focusing on singing, playing an instrument, or doing whatever it is you want to do. If you want to sing, learn to play guitar a little. If you want to play an instrument, have a few singing lessons. Learn how to produce your own music. The more you can do, the more marketable you become. You’ll learn more about the industry and what it takes to make it, too!
Find A Mentor
Find a mentor who can help you to look at things objectively and take the right steps to where you want to be. You could find a mentor online or in person. It could be a person you meet up with occasionally that you’re already close with, or somebody you are paying for their services. Make sure you check out credentials and testimonials if you’re doing the latter.
Secure Live Gigs
Live gigs will help you to get used to playing for a crowd and help you to market yourself further. Secure live gigs as often as you can – you won’t feel ready at first, but you should quickly build confidence.
You can find success in music if you work hard – are you going to go for it?
