How do I make a second edition of Breaking Down Breaking Bad worthwhile?

Breaking Down Breaking Bad

Back in late 2013, I decided to try an experiment: I decided I’d self-publish a book of television commentary on a show I was obsessed with at the time, Breaking Bad. The result was Breaking Down Breaking Bad. The idea was a culmination of several things coming together at once. I’d had over a decade in journalism and knew I could meet a deadline, and with the show coming to an end it looked like a great time to hit the world with something. I’d also been Editor in Chief for a website devoted to movie and TV criticism for a few years, so I’d been down the “critic” road before (though admittedly, it was never my jam; didn’t enjoy doing reviews then, don’t enjoy…

I’ll be broadcasting live this Friday from Youtube, because I am a colossal idiot

You may know that I co-host a modest little nerd&nostalgia show on Youtube. It’s fun. And sometimes stupid. And fun. But mostly stupid. I’d not have it any other way. The really stupid thing, though, is that I let my co-host, Tig of Nerd Out With Me, convince me to do a live Christmas special this Friday night. So that’s what we’re going to do. We’re going to broadcast live for hours, doing god knows what. Maybe singing Christmas songs while drinking beer and swinging replica Lord of the Rings axes at one another and accidentally breaking family heirlooms. We’ll have some special guests, including Bad Luck Bootsy from Cinemassacre / Angry Video Game Nerd. It’s going to be awful in the most wonderful of ways and…

Watching a bunch of Harry Potter trailers back-to-back, because why not?

A new movie set in the Harry Potterverse is about to debut, Big Giant Monsters and How to Get Them, so my esteemed Youtube Partner, Tig of Nerd out with Me fame, and I decided to do what any sane middle aged men drinking beer in an attic would do: we watched all the Harry Potter trailers back-to-back, jabbering as we did. Eight trailers is a lot. This is a long episode of Hours in the Attic, just short of our longest to date. But we also think it’s a fun way to quickly revisit all those Potter flicks, so check it out:

In which I chat with the folks at Saint Benjamin Brewing Company

A year or two back, I went on a tour of several Philadelphia breweries for the Philly Weekly. Almost certain I devoted one of my weekly columns to it, but the paper has shuffled around their website and most of my stuff is no longer online. Oh well. Anyway, among those breweries was Saint Benjamin, then a fresh new startup doing slight twists on traditional beers. They had solid brews, were in a cool part of town, and most important of all, they seemed like good people. Ever since, I’ve been sure to put in a good word for them whenever I get the chance. Flash forward to now. I’m beginning to do a series of monthly interviews on homebrewing for HomebrewTalk.com. Naturally, some of…

The Atari 2600, Axis & Allies, classic board games, and other Youtube shenanigans

I’ve been lax in posting recent Hours in the Attic videos because Reasons, so I figured the best way to alleviate my guilt would be to post several at once. Two are board game-related, which is always fun because board games rock, and the third is a bit of Atari 2600 nostalgia. So that’s swell. Check them out while I get back to pretending I’m a writer (and don’t forget to subscribe):   This next one, I don’t know how Tig managed to salvage it, because I was just rambling without direction or focus. That’s what years worth of loving this game will do to you, I guess. Axis & Allies isn’t the deepest war game out there, but for me it’s the most fun. I still…
