These days, most Americans get their electricity from a “grid” supplier. People can enjoy an on-demand supply that is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Sure, there may be the odd interruption to the service on rare occasions such as for maintenance work. But, on the whole, we can all expect to receive a reliable service.
Of course, on-demand power comes at a price, and it’s one that is often rising each year. As more demands get placed on the grid, investment must get made to make it sustainable. And that usually means we all have to pay a little extra to make that happen.
Today, there is a growing movement of people wishing to generate their own power. One of the top ways to do that is with solar energy. Is that a viable option for you? Well, it could be if you satisfy the following requirements:
Your house has a large roof
First of all, you will need a lot of solar panels to generate electricity from the sun. A large roof is a must to achieve that goal! Also, the way your house points is also an important factor. Why? Typically, homes that point to the south can generate the most energy.
You can afford the investment
The installation cost of solar panels and related equipment is around $9 per watt. So, a system that generated 5kW might need an investment of approximately $35,000. Still, that’s a conservative estimate. Installation costs WILL go down; in fact, they are as the infographic below suggests:
