National Novel Writing Month

Did you know it’s National Novel Writing Month? National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo, is a creative writing challenge now celebrating its 10th year.

The premise is simple. The idea is to bang out an entire novel in the month of November. Why? Just because. Just to see if you’re up to the challenge. The goal, according to the rules of the exercise, is to hit 50,000 words in a month (which is a but slim for today’s marketplace, frankly, but the challenge isn’t meant for you to churn out the next Great American Novel). You go to the website, you register, and if you meet the goal, you “win”. It’s that easy.

Last year, a little over 21,000 people met the challenge and wrote 50,000 words in the month of December.

For those who dream of writing but have not yet tackled the big mountain of actually finishing a major project, I can’t encourage you enough to get on board and DO this. How many people do you know who talk a lot about writing but never actually write? How many of you ARE one of these people?

NaNoWriMo is a great way to encourage people to stop TALKING and to start WRITING. Writing doesn’t have to be a solitary pursuit. Sometimes it helps when it’s not. With NaNoWriMo you’ve got thousands of other people playing along, encouraging you, and challenging you to keep up. It’s a great way to get up the momentum many of us need in order to stay productive.

So what are you waiting for? Go start writing a novel.
